Abstract This Decree-Law establishes purity criteria of food additives (others than colourings and sweeteners). It consists of 7 articles and 3 Annexes approving EC Commission Directive No. 96/77 of 2 December 1996 establishing the requirements and purity standards to be satisfied by food additives to be used for human consumption. Annexes specify purity criteria for additives which may be used in food destined to human consumption: for preservatives and antioxidants (Annex 1); for emulsifying agents, stabilizer agents, thickening agents and gelling agents (Annex 2). Annex 3 lists methods for establishing the purity of such additives.
