Where the Australian Maritime Authority is satisfied that there is a serious and imminent danger of pollution by oil to the coastline of Australia, it may take such measures on the high seas as it considers necessary to prevent, mitigate or eliminate the danger (sect. 8). Section 9 provides for measures to prevent pollution of the sea by substances other than oil. Measures are taken under the International Convention Relating to the Intervention on the High Seas in Cases of Oil Pollution Casualties respectively the Protocol Relating to Intervention on the High Seas in Cases of Marine Pollution by Substances other Than Oil, 1973. Section 10 deals with measures taken otherwise than under the Convention or the Protocol. The Act is completed by 3 Schedules containing the text of the Convention and Protocol and a list of substances made under the Protocol. (23 sections)
