Abstract

This Act makes provision for the control of trading practices and prices in Mauritius and establishes a Profiteering Division at the Supreme Court. The Act grants powers to the Minister to control prices of goods specified in the First Schedule to this Act and, in order to prevent hoarding, requires a trader who wishes to store any goods specified in the Third Schedule in any warehouse to apply to the Permanent Secretary for a certificate of registration of the warehouse. A holder of a certificate shall keep in his or her warehouse only goods of the class of goods specified in the certificate, shall not use other places for the storage of such goods and remove goods only in the course of normal trading practices. The Profiteering Division of the Supreme Court shall have exclusive jurisdiction to try any person charged with an offence under this Act and the Fair Trading Act. The Act applies to various food items.
