They aim to protect human health from the adverse effects of any contamination (not defined) of water intended for human consumption by ensuring that the water meets water quality standards. The Regulations make provision for, among other things, a register of supply systems to be kept by enforcing authorities, risk assessment of water supplies, Part 4 makes provision in relation to water quality standards and duties, monitoring and analysis, investigation and remedial action, information and reporting, enforcement, and offences. The Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland may define areas that are to be supply zones for the purposes of these Regulations. “Enforcing authority”, in relation to water, means a local authority for an area within which is a point of compliance in relation to the water.
