The main effect of the Regulations is to further improve the level of protection for consumers purchasing foodstuffs by the introduction of the following measures: (a) the extension of the scope of the Regulations to include foodstuffs supplied to "mass caterers" (restaurants, hospitals, canteens etc.); (b) the requirement to display a "use-by" date instead of a "best before" date for highly perishable foodstuffs; (c) the requirement to display a "best before" date on some products which have been exempt from this requirement heretofore (e.g. foodstuffs with a minimum durability exceeding 18 months); and (d) the requirement that foodstuffs which have been treated with ionizing radiation bear an indication to that effect. Trade in products not complying with the provisions of these Regulations is prohibited.
