Resumen

This Guideline on Healthcare Waste Management is a nationwide sectoral document aiming to guide the effective management of healthcare waste by (i) providing recommendations on safe, efficient, sustainable, affordable, and acceptable methods of disposal of wastes generated from healthcare activities; (ii) helping to manage and control the disposal of healthcare waste and preventing the risk of potentially harmful exposures; (iii) providing waste handlers with recommendations on proper handling and disposal of healthcare waste, thus ensuring their health and safety as well as that of the general public. The healthcare waste object of this Guideline includes (i) all wastes generated within healthcare establishments, research facilities, and laboratories related to clinical procedures and activities; (ii) wastes generated from minor sources such as those produced in the course of healthcare undertaken at home. This kind of waste can be both hazardous and non-hazardous, meaning the waste that has not been in contact with infectious agents, hazardous chemicals, or radioactive substances. The general principle encourages waste minimization, as well as reuse and recycling. The main sections regard (i) segregation, storage, and transportation of healthcare waste; (ii) treatment and disposal methods; (iii) healthcare waste management in emergencies.
