The healthcare waste object of this Guideline includes (i) all wastes generated within healthcare establishments, research facilities, and laboratories related to clinical procedures and activities; (ii) wastes generated from minor sources such as those produced in the course of healthcare undertaken at home. This kind of waste can be both hazardous and non-hazardous, meaning the waste that has not been in contact with infectious agents, hazardous chemicals, or radioactive substances. The general principle encourages waste minimization, as well as reuse and recycling. The main sections regard (i) segregation, storage, and transportation of healthcare waste; (ii) treatment and disposal methods; (iii) healthcare waste management in emergencies.
