Abstract This Law consisting of 22 articles divided in IV Chapters aims at protecting public health empowering the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources (MRMWR) to deliver the necessary regulations and enforcement in support of consumer safety. This Law aims at ensuring the safety and quality of food products in Oman. Chapter I deals with: hygienic rules for food circulation; promotion of food stuffs; aspects of distribution and transportation of food products and related permits; storage; and compliance with conditions and the standard specifications approved by the competent authority. Chapter II deals with the import and export of food products; permits for the release of food shipments; the Committee in charge of issuing conditions for issuing permits regarding food safety and quality in compliance with approved standards; respect of OIE and SPS recommendations. Chapter III deals with controls on food circulation including all means of food transport; inspections; possible withdrawal from the food market; registration. Art.21 emphasizes the need to coordinate the main laboratories of the concerned authorities, each in its specialization, in charge of submitting to the Committee reports on the analysis results for tested samples. Chapter IV deals with the penalties for violating the provisions of this Law. They include imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year and pecuniary punishments.
