Abstract

These Regulations, made under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Act, 1996, appoint the National Biosafety Committee as the National Focal Point on biosafety for purposes of the Cartegena Protocol on Biosafety, which is set out in the First Schedule. It defines functions, powers and duties of the Committee. The Regulations also provides that implementation of biosafety practices in genetic engineering and biotechnological work shall be supervised by: (a) the National Biosafety Committee; (b) the regulatory agencies referred to in the Sixth Schedule; (c) the relevant institutional biosafety committees; and (d) the Principal Investigator, and provide rules relative to contained use, import, transit, etc. of GMO's.
