Article 8 of the Act was amended by Article 112 of Act. 100/2020; the change takes effect on 1 January 2021. Abstract The present Act lays down rules on veterinarians and animal health services. It consists of six chapters: I. General provisions; II. Senior management; III. Rights and duties; IV. District Veterinarians; V. Specialist veterinarians; VI. Penalties, entry into force, etc. It applies to veterinarians appointed or employed by the state and veterinarians and animal health professionals who work under a related license granted in accordance with this Act. It entrusts veterinarians and animal health professionals with safeguarding the health of animals in the country, and promoting improved health and well-being, increased livestock profitability and good living conditions and treatment of animals. The Act establishes a veterinary council consisting of four veterinarians appointed for five years, and describes its duties and responsibilities. Article 5 describes the duties and responsibilities of the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority on matters related to animal health and hygiene in the production and treatment of livestock products. Finally, the Act describes the rights and duties of veterinarians. Transitional provision no. III mandates the issuance of a regulation concerning the obligation of the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture to provide regular veterinary services as well as emergency services to ensure the welfare of animals in scattered settlements.
