The Act consists of 126 sections divided into 9 Parts: Preliminary provisions (I); Administrative and general provisions (II); Provisions regarding food (III); Provisions regarding drugs (IV); Cosmetics (V); Packaging and labelling (VI); Promotion (VII); Enforcement and legal proceedings (VIII); Miscellaneous provisions and savings (IX). The Tanzania Foods and Drugs Authority (TFDA) shall be established and shall regulate quality, safety, manufacture, labelling, marking etc. of food, drugs, cosmetics, etc. (sect. 5). Premises which manufacture for sale, sell supply or store products regulated under this Act shall register to the Authority. Application for licenses and permits shall be made to the Authority (sects. 21 and 22). Pre-packaged food or food products must be registered by the Authority (sect. 28). Regulations prescribing standards to be complied with by manufacturers with regard to the composition of food are outlined in section 29. Sections 30 to 38 deal with matters related to prohibition of food adulteration, offences regarding the sale, etc. of unfit food, examination performed by inspectors of food suspected to be unfit for human consumption, restrictions on importation of food and application for registration of importers. Rules related to milk, milk products and milk substitutes are outlined in sections 39 and 40. Restrictions on use of premises for the slaughtering of animals and sale of meat are defined in sections 41 to 43. The Minister shall make regulations regarding food hygiene (sects. 44 to 46). Chapter IV outlines restrictions of pharmacy business, registration and clinical trials of drugs, medical devices or herbal drugs, import and export of drugs, and prohibited drugs.
