The effect of the Regulations is to lower the threshold at which afforestation requires planning permission from 200 hectares to 70 hectares. A corresponding change has been made in the European Communities (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations, 1996 (S.I. No. 101 of 1996) in relation to the threshold at which afforestation requires environmental impact assessment.
