The North Pacific Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional councils established by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act in 1976 to manage fisheries in the 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone. The scallop fishery in Alaska's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ; 3-200 miles offshore) is jointly managed by the state and federal government under the FMP. A primary objective of the FMP is to establish and maintain consistent management efforts at the State and Federal levels. Most aspects of scallop fishery management are delegated to the State of Alaska, while limited access and other federal requirements are under jurisdiction of the federal government.
