First of all, article 1 lays down the following definition of “honey”: "the foodstuff which is produced by the honey-bee from the nectar of blossoms or secretions of or on living parts of plants, and which the bees collect, transform, combine with specific substances of their own and store and leave to mature in honey combs". Honey may not be placed on the market unless it meets the requirements established by this Act. In particular, article 2 fixes the maximum allowable content in honey of substances such as water, saccharine, mineral substances and substances soluble in water. Products other than honey shall not be added to honey offered for sale as such (art. 3). Further provisions regard the mixture of national honey and honey originating in third countries. In accordance with article 4, honey marketed as such or used in any product intended for human consumption shall be free from organic or inorganic matters foreign to its composition, such as mould, insects, insect debris, brood or grains of sand. Article 6 establishes packaging, labelling and transport requirements to be met by honey. It shall be transported in compliance with the conditions laid down in article 11 of Act No. 283 of 1962.
