Resumen

The North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC) recognizes the importance of addressing the impacts of climate change on fisheries and ecosystems. Several regional fisheries management organizations have already taken steps to prepare for these emerging impacts. The UN General Assembly's Sustainable Fisheries Resolution emphasizes the need to assess risks and potential adverse impacts of climate change on fish stocks when establishing conservation and management measures. Climate change is causing shifts in the distribution and abundance of global fisheries, affecting ecosystems, livelihoods, and food systems worldwide. The NPFC currently lacks provisions to analyze and address the potential impacts of climate change on fisheries within its jurisdiction. The NPFC, PICES Framework for Enhanced Scientific Collaboration prioritizes climate change integration into stock assessments, conservation of vulnerable marine ecosystems, and an ecosystem approach to fisheries. There is a recognized need to develop a comprehensive approach to understanding and addressing the impacts of climate change on fishery resources in the Convention Area.
