Resumen

This Presidential Decree, consisting of 12 articles, moves from the consideration that marine debris causes environmental pollution and damage to the aquatic ecosystem, as well as endangers human health; that plastic and micro-plastic waste are most difficult to be decomposed by natural processes and therefore are harmful components to the aquatic ecosystem and the human health; that Indonesian government is committed to handle waste plastic in the sea by 70% until 2025. The Presidential Decree defines and explains the meaning of the following terms: marine pollution; waste; marine debris; plastic waste. In order to handle marine debris, this Decree concerns the implementation of the 2018-2025 National Action Plan for handling marine waste, as a document containing strategies, programs and activities and providing measures and references for institutions, public and business actors to accelerate the handling of marine debris. The Decree establishes that the National Action Plan is implemented through: national movement to increase stakeholder awareness; waste management originating from land; waste management on the coast and the sea; funding mechanisms, institutional strengthening, supervision, and law enforcement; research and development.
