Resumen

The Regulations give effect to the International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969. Existing ships and new ships of less than 24 metres in length including fishing boats registered under the Mercantile Marine Act, 1955 and Part IV of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1984, will have their tonnage ascertained in accordance with the provisions of these Regulations as set out in the Fourth Schedule and Appendices 1-5 thereto (reg. 12). The treatment of foreign ships whilst within the State or the territorial waters thereof, is dealt with in Part V of the Regulations and provides for the inspection of their tonnage certificate (reg. 14). The Regulations also implement the Interim Scheme for the Tonnage Measurement for Certain Ships, adopted by the International Maritime Organization in Resolution A.494. This Scheme permits the use of gross tonnage ascertained in accordance with the provisions of the Regulations as set out in the Fourth Schedule and Appendices thereto to be used for the application of the provisions of regulations made under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 and the Protocol of 1978 thereto. (reg. 16).
