Resumen

The Regulations concern contaminants (defined in reg. 3) contained in food used for human consumption. They shall not apply to contaminants that are subject to more specific rules. Food that contains contaminants in an amount that is unacceptable fro the point of view of public health shall not be placed on the market (reg. 4). The maximum levels of specified contaminants may not exceed levels indicated in the Schedule (reg. 5). Criteria for sampling and testing are laid down in the same Schedule. Levels of nitrate may be higher than those set out in the Schedule for a period to be established by the Superintendent for Public Health and provided that codes of good agricultural practice are applied to achieve gradual progress towards established levels. (reg. 6). Certain exemptions for specified contaminants in listed products are given in regulations 7, 8 and 9.
