Abstract

Objectives: To promote cooperation among the riparian States of the Senegal river in the management and development of its resources.

Summary of provisions: (a) Projects for agricultural or industrial exploitation likely to modify the characteristics of the river appreciably to be implemented only with prior approval of the contracting States (art. 4); (b) Joint programme of work for the coordinated development and rational exploitation of water resources to be defined by the Organization (art. 8); (c) Joint projects to be carried out by management agencies (art. 15), and coordinated by the Office of the High Commissioner (arts. 19 and 20); (d) The organization to be governed by a Council of Ministers, assisted by a Standing Commission to define principles and procedures for sharing the waters of the river, and an advisory Inter-State Committee for Research and Agricultural Development.
