Summary of provisions: Parties to the Agreement agree that the purposes of the SPREP are to promote co-operation and co-ordination in the South Pacific region, to provide assistance in order to protect and improve the environment and to ensure sustainable development (art. 2). To this end, Parties members of the SPREP undertake to adopt an Action Plan setting the strategies and objectives of the Programme. The Action Plan is to include, inter alia, monitoring and assessing the state of the environment, protecting the atmosphere and terrestrial, freshwater coastal and marine ecosystems and species, ensuring sustainable use of resources, reducing pollution and increasing educational and training awareness activities. Institutional mechanisms: A SPREP Meeting and a Secretariat are established (art. 1).
