Abstract

For the purpose of a partial alignment of the Cypriot legislative frame with Council Directive 78/659/EEC on the quality of fresh waters needing protection or improvement in order to support fish life, the present Regulations are made pursuant to article 5 (section 2) of the Water Pollution Control Law of 2002. The aim of these Regulations is to protect or improve the quality of those running or standing waters which support or which, if pollution were reduced or eliminated, would become capable of supporting fish belonging to indigenous species or species the presence of which is judged desirable for water management purposes. The Regulations apply to those waters designated, by Order in the Gazette, as salmonid and cyprinid waters and in compliance with the technical parameters to be published in the Gazette, in compliance with paragraph (a), section (1) of article 5 of the principal law. For the designated waters, the Minister shall set, by Order in the Gazette, quality values and physical and chemical parameters. Also, the Minister shall establish programmes in order to reduce pollution and to ensure that designated waters conform to the values set by Order in the Gazette. The Minister shall be responsible for the monitoring of the aquatic environment and shall provide the European Commission with information concerning: the waters designated; the revision of the designation of certain waters; and any other provision laid down in order to establish new parameters.
