Abstract

This Act, consisting of 87 articles and divided into fourteen Parts, provides for a legislative and institutional framework to strengthen the promotion of trade and development of co-operative societies, in compliance with constitutional provisions, to facilitate the registration and licensing of co-operative societies, to increase the co-operation between the national and county governments in matters relating to co-operative societies, the improve the corporate governance of co-operative societies. The Act defines the following relevant terms: agricultural produce; apex co-operative society; co-operative society; co-operative tribunal. The Act concerns: role and duties of the county executive committee member, including: promoting good governance in co-operative societies, issuance of guidelines and regulations to facilitate growth and regulation of co-operative societies; registration of co-operative societies; rights and liabilities of members; duties of co-operative societies; procedural matters concerning co-operative societies; rights and obligations of co-operative societies; investment and funding; inspection; procedure for dissolution; dispute settlement and competencies of the tribunal.
