Abstract The Sugar Board of Tanzania is established as a body corporate under section 3 and a National Sugar Institute is established as a body corporate under section 6. The functions of the Board are outlined in section 4 and include the making of regulations for the sugar industry, to regulate and control the quality of sugar and sugar by-products, and to promote in various ways the production, processing and marketing of sugar in Tanzania, the exportation of sugar, and the development of small-holder sugar cane growers. The Board shall also grant licenses for sugar manufactures and small scale sugar plant operators (sect. 12) and sugar dealers (sects. 13 and 14), register sugar cane growers (sect. 7), and register sugar processing plants (sect. 13). The Director of the Department responsible for crop development and technical services of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security shall prescribe types and varieties of sugar cane to be grown in Tanzania (sect. 8) and authorize breeding and importation of seed cuttings and seedlings for the cultivation of sugar cane (sect. 9). A Sugar Development Fund, managed by the Board, is established under section 31.
