Abstract

This Act provides a legal framework to promote the utilization of renewable energy in Tonga. It creates the Renewable Energy Authority and provides with respect to renewable energy agreements. The Act shall apply to the production, storage or distribution of any form of energy derived from a renewable source specified in section 4. The functions and powers of the Renewable Energy Authority shall be vested in the Minister of Lands, Survey, Natural Resources and Environment. No person may produce, store or distribute any energy derived from a renewable source, except under the authority of a renewable energy agreement to be concluded with the Authority. The Act also defines offences and provides for regulation-making powers of the Minister.
