Abstract

This Regulation applies to Norwegian vessels, including barges and sets rules on the ban for carrying dangerous cargoes on Norwegian ships, unless authorized in adherence to the Maritime Safety Act. Responsible vessel owners shall submit documentation regarding the dangerous cargo before it is taken on board the ship, and will include information such as the the correct technical term for the dangerous cargo (UN numbers, IMO hazard class in accordance to international rules on the transport of packaged dangerous goods by sea IMDG Code); international rules for the construction and equipment of ships carrying dangerous chemicals in bulk (IBC Code); international rules for the construction and equipment of ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk (IGC code); class of ship required to transport the dangerous cargo in accordance with international safety regulations for the transport of packaged irradiated nuclear fuel, plutonium and high-level radioactive wastes on board ships (INF Code); amount of hazardous cargo; transport identification number when dangerous cargo is carried in other transportation units; emergency number to anyone knowledgeable of dangerous cargo's physicochemical properties and necessary measures thereof in case of an emergency. Vessels used as support function in offshore and carrying dangerous cargo in closed cargo carrier to, from and between Norwegian ports and installations on the Norwegian continental shelf, may be exempted from the requirement of transport of dangerous goods on domestic shipping (passenger ships on domestic voyages and cargo in domestic trade).
