Abstract This Regulation lays down rules on the management of sprat fishing for 2023-2024. It contains rules on fishing prohibitions and quotas; vessels with permission to participate in the coastal vessel group; vessels with purse seine permit, pelagic trawl permit, or North Sea trawl permit; and penalties and sanctions. The Regulation prohibits sprat fishing in the areas described in article 1, with the exception of, Norwegian vessels holding a permit, which are allowed to fish and land up to 10,000 tonnes of sprat in the EU zone. The maximum quota for individual vessels fishing in the EU zone is 550 tonnes. The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries has the authority to modify the maximum quota. The Regulation prohibits sprat fishing from 1 April to 31 July and coastal sprat fishing from 1 July to 31 July. The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries has the authority to halt fishing activities when the total or area quota has been deemed fully harvested.
