Abstract The purpose of the present Regulation is to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems. It applies to fishing with bottom fishing gear in Norway's territorial waters, economic zone including the fishing zone around Jan Mayen, and the fishing protection zone around Svalbard. For fishing with foreign vessels, the Regulation applies in Norway's economic zone, including the fishing zone around Jan Mayen, and in the territorial waters and fishing protection zone around Svalbard. The Regulation distinguishes between existing fishing areas and new fishing areas, which are all areas within the scope of this Regulation that are deeper than 1000 meters, incluing the areas defined in Article 2(c).
