This Regulation shall enter into force on the day of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. This Regulation shall apply from 1 January 2021.
Abstract

This Regulation establishes the LIFE Programme, Programme for the Environment and Climate Action for the period of 2021-2027. The general objectives of the LIFE Programme: (a) to contribute to a just transition towards a sustainable, circular, energy- efficient, renewable energy-based, climate-neutral and -resilient economy, to the protection, restoration and improvement of the quality of the environment, including the air, water and soil, and of health, and to halting and reversing biodiversity loss, including by supporting the implementation and management of the Natura 2000 network and tackling the degradation of ecosystems; (b) to improve the development, implementation, monitoring and enforcement of EU environmental and climate change policy and legislation, and to act as a catalyst for, and promote the integration and mainstreaming of environmental and climate objectives into other European Union policies and public and private sector practices; (c) to improve governance at all levels, in particular by enhancing the capacities of public and private actors and the involvement of civil society; (d) to support the implementation of the 7th Environment Action Programme and any subsequent Union environment action programme. The progress of the LIFE Programme will be monitored and reported regularly by the Commission towards the achievement of the objectives based on the indicators set out in Annex II. The Commission shall be assisted by the Committee for the LIFE Programme.
