Abstract The purpose of the nature reserve is to manage and protect a distinctive feature of woodland area of 3 564 acres with great variety of important elements for biological diversity, such as a large contiguous ravine system with varied topography and rare nature types as damp rock walls and forest environment (rainforest). The area has a special educational and scientific nature value as the largest recorded ravine systematic in Norway, with unusually well developed elm, and many other rare and threatened species.
