Abstract

This Regulation lays down rules for the placing of novel foods on the market within the European Union. The purpose of these provisions is to ensure the effective functioning of the internal market while providing a high level of protection of human health and consumers' interests. As a general principle, novel foods must be safe and if their safety cannot be assessed and scientific uncertainty persists, the precautionary principle shall be applied. Their use must not mislead the consumer. Novel foods must be included in a European Union list of authorized novel foods in order to be placed on the market. Article concerns the procedure for determination of novel food status.
