Abstract In compliance with the principles laid down under Act No. 394 of 1991, the present Regional Act makes provision on the setting up and management of protected areas with a view to contributing to the protection and preservation of the environment and landscape. The creation and management of protected areas shall be carried out through the cooperation between the Region, the Provinces, the Communes and Mountain Communities (art. 1). Nature areas are classified into nature parks, nature reserves and natural monuments (art. 2). The protected areas to be set up shall be defined in the three-year programme to be adopted as per article 4.
