Abstract

These Regulations provide rules for the prevention, control and eradication of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in animals. They shall apply to the production and placing on the market of live animals and products of animal origin and in certain specific cases to exports thereof. The Regulations consist of seven Chapters, completed by several schedules. Chapter II describes the determination of BSE. Chapter III regards the prevention of TSE. The preventive measures include a monitoring system, prohibitions concerning animal feeding and education programmes. Chapter IV deals with control and eradication of TSEs. Chapter V regulates the placing on the market and export of live animals, their semen, embryos and ova, as well as products of animals origin. Chapter VI concerns reference laboratories, sampling, testing and controls.
