Abstract

With this Presidential Decree the Greek legislative framework is adapted towards the provisions of Council Directive 2009/71/EURATOM establishing a Community framework for the nuclear safety of nuclear installations. Its provisions aim at: 1) maintaining a high level of nuclear safety of the nuclear installations in the Greek territory through: a) the completion and extension of already existing legislation, in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 3 of article 2, as well as with paragraphs 1 and 2 of article 5 of Legislative Decree No. 854/1971 “regarding the terms of establishment and operation of nuclear installations”, and b) the establishment of additional measures for the better possible operation of this framework. 2) future adoption of national nuclear safety regulations and arrangements to protect workers, the general public and the environment in Greece against the dangers arising from ionizing radiations from nuclear installations. The Greek Committee of Nuclear Energy (Ελληνική Επιτροπή Ατομικής Ενέργειας - EEAE) is established as the responsible regulating Body in the field of nuclear safety of nuclear installations. It oversees the observation of the provisions of the present Decree and ensures that the provisions in question are implemented, according to the safety requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the National Regulations against radiations as well as the remaining National Regulations that are related to nuclear safety.
