Country/Territory United Kingdom Territorial subdivision Wales Document type Regulation Date 2013 Source FAO, FAOLEX Subject Agricultural & rural development, Environment gen., Land & soil, Cultivated plants, Water Keyword Agricultural development Farming Fertilizers/nutrients Freshwater pollution Policy/planning Water conservation zone Groundwater Pollution control Soil pollution/quality Plant production Geographical area Atlantic Ocean Islands, Europe, Europe and Central Asia, North Atlantic, North Sea, North-East Atlantic, Northern Europe Abstract These Regulations provide for controlled application of nitrogen fertilizer in nitrate sensitive areas. In relation to Wales, they designate nitrate vulnerable zones and provide for the calculation of the total amount of nitrogen applied to land the occupier and place restrictions on such application. The Regulations, among other things, establish an appeals procedure against the designation, impose annual limits on the amount of nitrogen from organic manure that may be applied or spread in a holding in a nitrate vulnerable zone, establish requirements relating to the amount of nitrogen to be spread on a crop, and requires an occupier to plan in advance how much nitrogen fertilizer will be spread, require an occupier to provide a risk map of the holding, and imposes conditions on how, where and when to spread nitrogen fertilizer, make provision for how nitrogen fertilizer must be stored, and requires storage capacity for manure produced on the holding.
