Abstract

This Act grants power to the Minister to declare, for the purposes specified in section 2 and on the recommendation of the National Parks Board, any area as a national park or nature reserve. The National Parks Board is established under section 3. It shall be the duty of the Board to consider what areas in Vanuatu fall within criteria set out in section 2 and determine under what category of parks and reserves and in what order they should be declared, and to make recommendation to the Minister as to the declaration of such areas as national parks or nature reserves (sect. 8). The Board shall prepare for the approval of the Minister a management plan in respect of each park or reserve in accordance with provisions of sections 10 and 11. The Minister may appoint for every park or reserve, a local management committee (sect. 13). The Local Management Committee shall advise the Board or the Minister, with regard to the management of the park or reserve and the management plan (sect. 14). For the purposes of this Act The Board may enter into an agreement with custom owners of the land or other persons interested in the land and may impose such restrictions on the exercise of rights over land as described in section 17. There shall be a Conservation Fund for the financial purposes of the Board (sect. 18). The Minister may make Regulations not inconsistent with this Act in accordance with section 21. (24 sections)
