Abstract

This Notice of the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, made under section 19 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008, lists activities in respect of which a waste management licence is required in accordance with section 20(b) of the Act. No person may commence, undertake a listed waste management activity unless a licence is issued in respect of such activity. Activities are divided into Category A activities for which a basic assessment process is required and Category B activities for which an environmental impact assessment process is required. Category A activities include storage of waste (except storage of waste in lagoons), treatment of waste and reuse, recycling and recovery of waste. Category B concerns activities involving large quantities of hazardous waste.
