Abstract This Act makes provision in respect of the principles to be followed in the Maldives with regard to marriage, divorce, payment of maintenance, custody, guardianship, ascription of legitimacy, proof of paternity and certain other matters of family life in the Maldives. Where a Maldives national contracts a marriage with another Maldives national, or a Maldives national contracts a marriage with a foreign national, that marriage shall be solemnized in accordance with the provisions of this Act. A man shall be incapable of simultaneously contracting a marriage with more than 4 women. Where there is a woman suffering a period of iddah in respect of such a man, she shall for the purposes of this section be deemed to be a woman in simultaneous marriage with him.
