Abstract

This Law establishes rights to graze land in Greece, including public forests, forestry lands and grasslands referred to in article 3 of Law No. 998/1979 (A'289). It establishes that grazing rights on authorized grazing lands according to approved grazing management plans shall be allocated by the relevant Regional Units to farmers. To this end, a Committee for the distribution of Grazing Rights within the Regional Unity concerned shall be set up, the members of which shall be appointed by decision of the Regional Governor. Farmers who use private grazing land, owned or rented by individuals or Private law legal entities (NPIDs), are allocated extra land only for the portion of livestock not covered by the private lands. The rights to use the grazing shall be granted to farmers for a period corresponding to the achievement of the grazing management plans, which may not be less than 3 years, by signing a relevant leasing contract. If grazing lands are forbidden to be grazed or land identified as forestable areas, in the context of forestry legislation, the aforementioned Regional Unity Committee shall make appropriate grazing rights accordingly.
