Abstract This Law creates the State System of Conservation Units (SEUC) constituted by the set of state and municipal Conservation Units (UC), according to the provisions of Law No. 9.985 of 18 June 2000 as amended. The UCs of SEUC will be gathered in two groups, with different characteristics: 1) Integral Protection Units: biological reserve, ecological station, state park, municipal natural park, natural monument and wildlife refuge; 2) Sustainable Use Units: State and Municipal Forests, Extractive Reserve, Sustainable Development Reserve, Wildlife Reserve, Environmental Protection Area, Area of Relevant Ecological Interest. The basic objective of the Integral Protection Units is to preserve the natural heritage, with the indirect use only of their natural resources admitted, with the exception provided for in this Law. The basic objective of the Sustainable Use Units is to reconcile nature conservation with the sustainable use of the natural resources.
