Abstract

The present Decree, in implementation of Act No. 979 of 31 December 1982, provides for the setting up in the Trieste Gulf of a marine protected area to be known as Miramare. The aims pursued by the creation of such marine area are among others: (a) the promotion and protection of the environment and fauna and flora of the area; (b) performance of research programmes; (c) dissemination of information relating to biology of marine environments. Article 4 of the Decree lists out the activities which are prohibited within the marine area, including the taking of fauna or flora species (with the exception of sampling intended for scientific research purposes, upon authorization of the managing entity of the area), navigation, bathing, fishing (both professional and sport fishing) as well as hunting. The management of the marine area is entrusted, upon special agreement, to the Italian Association of the World Wildlife Fund.
