Abstract This notice is issued by the Environmental Protection Authority under section 74 of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. It is issued in accordance with section 76C of the Act, having had regard to the matters specified in section 76C(2). The objective of this notice, together with the Hazardous Substances (Minimum Degrees of Hazard) Notice 2017, is to carry over the classification system for hazardous substances established prior to the enactment of this notice. The Notice specifies: Classification system; Classes of hazardous properties; Subclasses and categories for explosive substances; Subclasses and categories for flammable substances; Subclasses and categories for oxidising substances and organic peroxides; Subclasses and categories for toxic substances; Subclasses and categories for corrosive substances; Subclasses and categories for ecotoxic substances. The seven Schedules in particular deal with the following matters: Classification criteria for explosive substances; Classification criteria for flammable substances; Classification criteria for oxidising substances and organic peroxides; Classification criteria for toxic substances; Classification criteria for corrosive substances; Classification criteria for ecotoxic substances; and Tables of hazard classifications.
