Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide Regulations, 2011 (L.N. 346 of 2011). Country/Territory Malta Document type Regulation Date 2011 Source FAO, FAOLEX Subject Air & atmosphere, Environment gen., Mineral resources, Sea Keyword Pollution control Climate change Air quality/air pollution Continental shelf Marine pollution Maritime zone Exploration Authorization/permit EEZ-Exclusive Economic Zone Geographical area Europe, Europe and Central Asia, European Union Countries, Mediterranean, Southern Europe Abstract These Regulations establish a legal framework for the environmentally safe geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) to contribute to the fight against climate change. The purpose of environmentally safe geological storage of CO2 is permanent containment of CO2 in such a way as to prevent and, where this is not possible, eliminate as far as possible negative effects and any risk to the environment and human health. These provisions apply to the geological storage of CO2 in Malta and on the continental shelf within the meaning of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Specific provisions concern the issue of exploration and storage permits.
