Abstract This Decree, composed of 4 articles, institutes “Cururupu” Extractive Reserve in the Municipalities of Cururupu and Serrano do Maranhão, in Maranhão State. The aim is to protect local traditional populations’ resources and culture thus granting a sustainable use of natural resources. The Decree defines the borders of the Extractive Reserve. Moreover, the Decree compels the Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) to manage the aforesaid protected area.
