Abstract

In order to protect seals - in particular the gray seal - and to assure them an undisturbed habitat, to promote scientific research/monitoring of seal population, and to preserve marine habitats, this Decree addresses a number of areas intended for such conservation (seal sanctuaries) where conservation measures are applied in adherence to article 2 of the Nature Conservation Act (1096/1996). It is prohibited to traveling in the seal sanctuaries area, from off the islets and rocks as the attached maps (Appendices 1-7) indicate. Fishing equipment for commercial fishing - such as trawling, nets of thin twine and traps is permitted in seal protection areas if they allow openings whereby seals cannot be trapped. Kallbådan seal sanctuary may also be used otherwise than for the aforementioned purposes. Maintenance and implementation of plans made for a second seal sanctuary with special regard to observation of seals.
