Abstract For the purposes of aligning the Cypriot legislative frame with Council Directive 87/217/EEC on the prevention and reduction of environmental pollution by asbestos, the present Regulations aim at establishing measures to reduce and prevent pollution by asbestos, in order to protect human health and the environment. The regulations provide that industrial plants, within which activities are taking place involving the use of asbestos or the manufacture of products containing asbestos, are required to obtain permission for waste emissions. The license is granted by the competent authority only after ascertaining that there will be no exceeding of certain limits set out in the Regulations and that the best available technology will be used. The operator of each facility at which asbestos is used is required to conduct measurements of asbestos waste gaseous emissions and to maintain records of measurements in which will register such measurements and any exceedances of the allowable emission limit value. The measurements should be conducted using an approved method described in the Annex to the Regulations. The Regulations also include the obligation of the competent authority to provide the European Commission with all necessary information regarding the results from the application of these Regulations to prevent and reduce emissions of asbestos into the atmosphere.
