Country/Territory Document type Regulation Date 2017 Source FAO, FAOLEX Subject Environment gen., Fisheries, Sea Keyword Marine pollution Marine fisheries Fishing gear/fishing method Equipment Fishing vessel Fishery management and conservation Pollution control Abstract This Conservation and Management Measure of the Western Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), adopted in accordance with Article 5 of the WCPFC Convention and recalling MARPOL and the Sustainable Development Goal 14, encourage Commission Members, Cooperating Non-Members and Participating Territories (CCMs) to ratify, accept, approve or accede to the annexes of MARPOL and the London Protocol and require them to prohibit their fishing vessels operating within the WCPFC Convention Area from discharging any plastics. The CCMs are also, among other things, encouraged to prohibit their fishing vessels operating within the WCPFC Convention Area from discharging oil and other waste and requested to ensure adequate port reception facilities are provided to receive waste from fishing vessels. The Conservation Measure also concerns reduction of loss and facilitation of recovery of fishing gear. This Measure will be reviewed by the Commission every three years to consider expanding the scope of measure with respect to the elimination of marine pollution caused by fishing vessels.
