It provides the legal framework that empowers local communities located in or near forest lands to access, manage, use and benefit from forest resources on those lands for sustenance and livelihood improvements as well as for community development. The Act provides for forestry land to be classified as Community forestry land. Community forestry land shall be identified, validated and identified by the FDA for approval by the Community Forest Management Body, i.e. a body appointed by the Community assembly to manage community forest resources. The Forestry Development Authority observe the principles of fair and sustainable management of forest resources as set out by this Act. The Act sets out rules for management of forest resources by communities including (large-scale) commercial operations on community forest lands. It also concerns dispute resolution.
