Abstract

The objective of these Regulations is to create a Committee so as to achieve an integrated approach on biosafety, the contained use of genetically-modified micro-organisms, the deliberate release into the environment of genetically-modified organisms, and the pacing on the market of genetically-modified organisms for purposes of achieving a high level of protection of human health and the environment. “Contained use”, deliberate release” and “genetically-modified micro-organisms” are defined in article 3. The Committee shall provide the Malta Environment and Planning Authority with recommendations on the granting of permits under the Contained Use Of Genetically-Modified Micro-Organisms Regulations, 2002. The Committee is also involved in compliance monitoring in accordance with those Regulations. Schedule II sets out the terms of reference of the Committee.
