Résumé

The publication of the 1993 Commission Green Paper on remedying damage to the environment marked a return by the European Union (EU) to the task of formulating a Union - wide regime of civil liability for environmental damage. It also opened a lively debate as to whether such a system should be adopted at all, and, if so, in whatt form. This article aims to outline the main contents of the Green Paper and to comment briefly on the inherent implications of some of the policy options identified therein.
