Entry into force notes
This Act shall enter into force in whole or in Parts on a date or dates notified by the Minister in the Gazette.
Résumé

This Act lays down provisions on the establishment and functioning of the Nauru Foreign Vessel Administration; registration of vessels; port of registry; restriction on registration; survey and measurement of vessel; alteration, change or reconstruction of the vessel; required documents; marking of vessel; application and evaluation procedures for registration of vessels; issuance of certificate of registry on the completion of the registration of a vessel and upon the payment of fees prescribed under section 24; use of certificates and penalties for misuse; loss, termination, suspension and restoration of certificate; transfer of the ownership of a registered vessel and its registration; restriction on carriage and packaging of dangerous goods; certificate of competency for and rights and duties of seamen and crew members; safety of life and property at sea; detention of vessels in case of failure to comply with the requirements of this Act; offences and penalties; and jurisdiction over vessel lying off coast and in case of offence on board vessel. In order to ensure safety at sea and prevent pollution from ships, this Act addresses the duties and obligations of the owner and the Master of the vessel in compliance with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization Conventions, the International Labour Organization Conventions and other relevant international instruments listed in Schedule 2. The Cabinet may make regulations prescribing all matters necessary or convenient to be prescribed for carrying out or giving effect to this Act.
